Loyola University Maryland Athletics

The name Mangione is synonymous with Loyola soccer. Nick Mangione began the family tradition at Evergreen.

Mangione came to Loyola in 1976, and became the only freshman to earn a starting berth on a veteran Greyhound squad that won the Division II national championship. During his four years, he led the Greyhound soccer team to an outstanding 57-15-2 record, one national title, and a South Atlantic Regional championship. In his senior season of 1979, co-captain Mangione rode a 15-goal performance to a berth on the NSCAA All-American team. He finished his career with 47 goals and 22 assists, good enough for fourth place on the all-time Loyola scoring list at the time of his induction.

Mangione played professional soccer for four years, with the hometown Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League. The 1980 Loyola grad was a quick, cagey midfielder who could make things happen in the fast-moving indoor game. Mangione played a key role on the Blast world championship team of 1983-84. He finished his pro soccer career with the MISL's Kansas City Comets.

The Mangione-Loyola connection continued for several years following Nick's graduation. His two younger brothers, Pete and Sam, made significant contributions to Loyola soccer.
