Nap Doherty holds a distinction of being an outstanding player and later coach at Loyola; at the time of his graduation in 1953, he was third all-time at the school in points (1,109), and he remains second all-time at the school in coaching victories (165).
After being recruited to Loyola out of Bardstown, Kentucky, where he played high school basketball, Doherty scored 1,109 points and was a member of the All-Mason-Dixon Conference team as a junior and senior in 1952 and 1953.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Doherty later became the head men's basketball coach at Loyola, spending 12 seasons at the helm of the program from 1961-1974. Doherty coached the Greyhounds to the 1970-71 Mason-Dixon Conference title, the school's first since he closed out his playing career in 1953.
He also guided the team to the 1973 Mason-Dixon crown and a bid in the NCAA Division II Championships, the Greyhounds' first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships in basketball. The bid included a first-round win in the South Atlantic Regional. Doherty finished with a 165-153 (.519) career record as the Loyola head coach.
Doherty also served as the school's assistant athletic director and director of intramurals, and he was induced to the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982.
