O'Donnell became the first Loyola basketball star to play in the NBA. After leading Loyola to the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships from 1946-49, O'Donnell was drafted by Baltimore Bullets in 1950, where he scored 18 points in the first pro games. He also played three years in the Eastern Professional League, following his NBA debut.
