Bill Klarner remains one of the outstanding swimmers in Loyola athletic history. During his 1948-50 career, Klarner swam the breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle events and set several longstanding Loyola records. Klarner captained the 1950 Loyola swimmers, and set a Mason-Dixon Conference record while winning the 200--yard breaststroke.

Klarner didn't stray too far from the pool after graduation in 1951. He served as Loyola's swimming and diving coach from 1951-63, and led the Seadogs to seven Mason-Dixon Conference championships. He then moved to Johns Hopkins, where he coached the Blue Jay swimmers from 1964-67.
