A fine basketball player during the early 1940's, he earned four varsity basketball letters and helped the Greyhounds to their first two Mason-Dixon conference titles in 1940-41 and 1941-42. He was also a member of Loyola's first intercollegiate soccer team in 1942 which won the Mason-Dixon conference championship. After graduation in 1943, he spent several years in the service and saw action in the Pacific theater during WWII. He played semi-pro ball upon his return in 1945 and was drafted by the Washington Bullets of the old American Basketball Association in 1947.
