Blaney was a basketball standout from 1966-70. He concluded his Loyola career in 23rd place among Greyhound leading scorers with 1,061 points. A four-year starter at point guard, Blaney was a natural leader. He was the captain of the team in 1969-70. His leadership was seen off the court as well. One of Loyola's first resident students, Blaney was active in the campus community; he served as a senator in Loyola's Student Government Association, and was a student liaison for Loyola's residential population.
