Marko Turcinov came to Loyola from the Cleveland area in 2001 at the perfect time for a top-notch swimmer interested in business: both the new Sellinger School building and the beautiful Fitness & Aquatic Center (FAC) had opened the year before. He earned his business degree in 2005, by which time he'd also earned the unofficial distinction of top Greyhound swimmer in the pool's short history, not to mention one of the best in program annals. Turcinov finished his Loyola career in the pool with 11 school records. During his four years as a Greyhound, he set or reset school records, many of them his own, more than 30 times. The new FAC hosted the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) swimming championships in each of his four seasons at Loyola, and he twice was named the MAAC Swimmer of the Year at his home pool. In 2005, his senior year, he earned the honor after setting MAAC records in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. In 2004, he won the award for the first time by winning the same three events and also helping three relay teams earn medals. "I didn't really have a favorite event," Turcinov says. "If you can do a good fly and freestyle, you can be good at the IM." He was the winner of the John R. Mohler Award in 2005 as Loyola's top senior male student-athlete. "I had been swimming for so long at a fairly high level that I think I was used to the grind," he says. "The seasons are so long, and it requires a lot of focus to do well in school and in the pool." Turcinov also earned an MBA from Loyola and served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Greyhounds for several years after graduation. He currently works in investment banking in New York City, where he met his wife when both were on a Masters swim team.
