Loyola University Maryland hosts the third and fourth matches of a four-match Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference homestand on Saturday and Sunday, October 6-7, 2012, in Reitz Arena.
Saint Peter’s University visits the Evergreen campus on Saturday, and Manhattan College follows on Sunday. Both matches are slated to start at 2 o’clock.
A Look At The Competition
Saint Peter’s will enter Reitz Arena with a 1-19 overall record and a 0-6 mark in MAAC action.
The Jaspers, who play at Rider University on Saturday afternoon, bring a 9-9 overall mark and 4-3 MAAC record into the weekend.
Loyola rallied from set-deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 last Saturday to defeat visiting Iona College in five, outlasting the Gaels, 15-13, in the deciding game. Faye Lukas had 28 kills, and Jac Bullock added 15 in the win, while Lauren Andersen passed out 57 assists.
On Sunday afternoon, MAAC preseason favorite Fairfield University defeated the Greyhounds in a three-set sweep.
Lukas’ Career Night
Junior outside hitter Faye Lukas has steadily improved her career-high in kills throughout the season. Last year, she set her best at 17, and she then upped it to 19 and a day later 20 during this season’s second weekend. She stretched it to 22 in a home win over Charleston Southern University on September 8, but Lukas blew that mark away with 28 last Saturday against Iona.
Through 16 matches this year, Lukas is averaging 3.88 kills per set, tops in the MAAC. She has 233 total in 635 swings. Her numbers are up sharply from a year ago when she finished with 247 (2.25 kps) and a .130 percentage. This year, she is hitting .200.
Minding The Middle
Jac Bullock and Mindy Maloney, Loyola’s starting middle blockers, both hit .500 or above and has 12 kills each in Sunday’s setback against Fairfield.
Bullock, who is second in the MAAC this year with a .328 hitting percentage, put away 12 kills without an error in 23 attempts for a .522 mark.
Meanwhile, Maloney had 12 kills with just one error on 22 swings for an even .500 outing. She is eighth in the league with a .277 hitting percentage this season. Maloney’s 12 kills were just one off her career-high of 13 set just a week earlier.
Spreading Out The Offense
Lauren Andersen set a career-high with 57 assists in the Greyhounds’ five-set win over Iona on Saturday night. This season, she has risen to third in the conference in assists per set (9.97) after finishing sixth last year.
