Lukas Continues Hot Hitting In Loss To Fairfield
Faye Lukas stretched her career-high streak of 10 or more kills to five matches on Saturday afternoon with a match-high 12, but the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team lost in three to Fairfield University.
Loyola University Maryland returns to Reitz Arena for a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches this weekend, the first two in a four-match homestand.
The Greyhounds will host Iona College and Fairfield University on Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30. The matches are slated to begin at 7 and 2 p.m., respectively.
A Look At The Competition
Iona enters Saturday's match as one of two unbeaten teams in the MAAC through the first two weeks of conference competition. At 3-0 thus far, the Gaels are a half-game back of first-place Canisius (4-0). Iona improved to 5-9 overall last weekend when it defeated Fairfield in three sets.
Fairfield sits tied for fourth in the league at 3-2 after a three-set sweep of Marist College on Wednesday night. The Stags, who are 8-7 overall, play at Rider University on Saturday afternoon before visiting Baltimore.
Loyola made its annual trip to the Buffalo, N.Y., area and lost a pair of MAAC matches last weekend, falling 3-0 at Canisius College and 3-1 at Niagara University.
Jac Bullock had 10 kills to lead the team at Canisius, and four players had 10 or more kills in the four-set match against the Purple Eagles.
Maloney Blows Away Career-High
Mindy Maloney topped her previous career-high in kills by four last Sunday when the Greyhounds played at Niagara. The sophomore middle hit .323 and tallied 13 kills, eclipsing her previous best of nine set twice (against Saint Francis Pa. and Charleston Southern) earlier this season.
She led four players in double figures against the Purple Eagles, a season-high for the Greyhounds. Jac Bullock and Faye Lukas each had 12 kills, and Katie Dircks contribued 10.
Keep Swinging Away
Faye Lukas has become the Greyhounds' primary hitter this season and has 535 swings through 14 matches. From the outside, she has put away an average of 3.75 kills per set (195 total) this year, and she leads the MAAC In kills per set.
Her numbers are up considerably from her sophomore season in 2011 when she had 247 kills (2.25 per set) and a .130 hitting percentage.
Jac Bullock, meanwhile, is third in the MAAC in hitting percentage (.323) and eighth in kills per set (3.02).
As a team, Loyola is hitting .193 this season, the third- best percentage in the MAAC after finishing last year next-to-last at .145.
