Loyola University Maryland volleyball hosts the third-annual Greyhound Challenge presented by Radisson Hotel at Cross Keys and the Hunt Valley Inn on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6, in Reitz Arena.
The tournament opens with a match between Dartmouth College and Saint Francis (Pa.) University at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by the Greyhounds taking on Quinnipiac University at 7 o’clock.
Saturday gets underway at 11 a.m. when Loyola plays Dartmouth. Quinnipiac and Saint Francis hit the court at 1:30 with Quinnipiac and Dartmouth faceing off at 4 p.m. The Greyhounds close play in the challenge at 7 p.m. Saturday versus Saint Francis.
Cichosz Leads The Hitting
Freshman Molly Cichosz acquitted herself well in her first collegiate action, leading the Greyhounds in kills and kills per game at the La Salle Invitational while earning All-Tournament honors. Cichosz swung at a .227 clip while putting away 46 kills, an average of 3.86 per set.
In the tournament finale against the host Explorers, Cichosz became the first Loyola freshman since Christina Greenup in 2004 to post 20 or more kills in a match, finishing with 22. She also became the first Loyola freshman to have 12 or more kills in her first three matches since Nina Camaioni did so in 2007.
From The Middle
Mindy Maloney continued to score points offensive from the middle for the Greyhounds after closing last season as the Patriot League leader in hitting percentage in conference matches. Last weekend, Maloney had 30 kills, 2.5 per set, and hit .273.
The senior posted a career-best 14 kills in the final match against La Salle, upping her previous high by one. In the tournament opener against Coppin State University, Maloney had eight kills, logging the 500th of her career in the process.
Lauren Andersen started all three matches as the Greyhounds’ setter at the La Salle Invitation, finishing with an average of 8.83 assists per set, but she also continued to be one of the team’s best defensive players. Andersen pulled up 24 digs, an average of 2.0. In her career at Loyola, Andersen has 2,864 assists and 681 digs.

Volleyball Splits Final Pair Of Matches in Pittsburgh
First-year head coach Scott Pennewill collected his first win at the helm of the Greyhounds and junior Karlee Woodward was named to the all-tournament team as Loyola concluded play Saturday at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational with a split, beating St. Francis (Pa.), 3-1, before falling to host Duquesne, 3-0.
