LEXINGTON, Ky. - With a combined grade-point average of 3.52 during the 2013-2014 academic year, the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team was one of 134 NCAA Division I schools to earn the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Monday.

Teams that achieve a 3.30 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale are eligible to receive the award. It is the second year in a row that the Greyhounds have earned the honor.

"We're proud to be named a 2014 recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award," said Jake Lawrence, Loyola's head coach. "It's a testament to the commitment our players and staff show to academic excellence. Each play has pitched in to raise our classroom standards, so this is truly a team efford. Adriana Mason, our associate director of academic affairs, deserves special recognition for her high expectations and hard work in helping our athletes meet their goals."

Twelve of the Greyhounds were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for having a GPA of 3.20 or higher during the fall competition season, headlined by then-junior middle blocker Mindy Maloney who earned Patriot League All-Academic Team honors; she was one of seven student-athletes league-wide named to the team.

From last year's team, 10 players were named to Loyola's Dean's List in at least one of the two semesters: Lauren Andersen, Jac Bullock, Micah Duzey, Elena Frac, Mindy Maloney, Kelly McShea, Samantha Reeves, Simone Reid, Nicole Sarby and Lauren Youngblood.

The Greyhounds begin their preseason practices in less than 10 days and start the 2014 season on Aug. 29 at the La Salle Invitational in Philadelphia.
