BALTIMORE - Kristen Baker, a former four-year starting middle blocker at Eastern Michigan University, has joined the Loyola University Maryland volleyball coaching staff as an assistant, Head Coach Jake Lawrence announced.

Baker was recently a volunteer assistant coach at Cleveland State University while also coaching with the Eastside Cleveland Junior Olympic Volleyball Club.

"We're thrilled to have Kristen join our staff at Loyola. She's a bright young coach and will bring a lot of passion into our gym," Lawrence said. "I expect she's going to relate especially well to our players and recruits. We were looking for someone with an outstanding work ethic and a strong drive for excellence; I believe Kristen fits the bill."

At Eastern Michigan, Baker posted 290 kills, an average of 2.30 per set, as a senior to finish second on the Eagles in both categories. She had 84 total blocks, 0.67 per set, and compiled 351.5 points in 2012, her final season.

Late in her senior campaign, Baker crossed the 1,000-career kills plateau, finishing with 1,014 to go with 377 total blocks. She earned Academic All-Mid-America Conference honors in 2012, as well. During her career, she helped the Eagles create a 13-win improvement from her freshman to senior seasons.

As a coach, she has worked with the Eastside Cleveland 14s team since 2010, and in 2013 she coached the Canton (Michigan) High School junior varsity team to an undefeated conference season while serving as an assistant to the school's varsity squad.

Baker earned her Bachelor of Science in physical education with a health education minor from Eastern Michigan in December 2013. She was a dean's list student at the Ypsilanti school and member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for four years.
