Seniors Finish Volleyball Careers With Five-Set Win Over Bucknell
Nov. 16, 2013
BALTIMORE - Faye Lukas had a season-high 24 kills in her final career match, as she and five of her fellow Loyola University Maryland seniors capped their tenures with a 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11, victory over Bucknell University in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon.
Lukas and her younger sister, Jane, combined for 40 of the Greyhounds' 69 kills in the match.
After Bucknell (10-16 overall, 3-13 Patriot League) won the first set, Faye Lukas had 13 kills in the next two sets, and Loyola (8-20, 5-11) took a 2-1 lead into the fourth.
The Bison had a 20-17 lead in the third set after a Morgan Mientus kill forced a Greyhounds' timeout. Out of the timeout, though, Jane Lukas recorded a kill, and a bad set made it a one-point Bucknell lead.
The Bison ran a play to their left side, but Loyola setter Lauren Andersen was there to put up a solo block on Mientus, tying the score at 20-20.
Bucknell called a timeout, but the Bison had a hitting error out of the break, and Jac Bullock put away a kill to give Loyola a 22-20 lead, capping a 5-0 run.
The Bison sided out on a Loyola miscue, but Faye Lukas had a kill to send it to 23-21 in the Greyhounds' favor. Bullock then served an ace, and Lukas ended the set with a cross-court kill.
Bucknell pushed the match to a deciding fifth game, despite seven kills in the fourth by Faye Lukas. The Bison then went up 4-2 on a Kristen Titley kill in the fifth, but a service error and back-to-back attack miscues made it 5-4 Greyhounds.
On the next play, Mindy Maloney recorded a solo block on Bucknell's Karen Campbell, forcing a Bison timeout with the Greyhounds up, 6-4.
Maloney had a kill on an overpass after the timeout, but Bucknell scored the next two points to get back within one, 7-6.
Jane Lukas had a sideout kill for Loyola at 8-6, and the Greyhounds pushed the advantage to 11-7 on a Bison hitting error.
Faye Lukas had consecutive kills to make it 14-10 Loyola, although Bucknell got a point back on a hitting error. Andersen wrapped up the match, and the season with a dump on match point, recording the winner for Loyola.
In addition to Faye's 24 kills, Jane Lukas had 16 on just 34 swings. Her 16 kills set a new career-high, and her .324 hitting percentage was her fourth best of the season.
Kara Schiffer had a season-high 29 digs and seven assists, while Andersen passed around 51 assists, had 16 digs two total blocks and four kills.
Maloney registered nine kills and a match-high seven total blocks, and Simone Reid put away nine kills and had three blocks.
