Volleyball Takes First Set, Can't Hold Off Colgate
Nov. 15, 2013
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland hit a match-high .375 and forced eight Colgate University hitting errors in the first set to win the opening stanza, but the Raiders finished the following three sets by the same score, defeating the Greyhounds 18-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-16, Friday night in Patriot League action.
Mindy Maloney led the way with four of her nine kills in the first set, as Loyola broke open a 5-5 tie with a 6-2 rally. The Greyhounds (7-20 overall, 4-11 Patriot League) did not lead by less than three after that point, and they went up by as many as nine, 21-12, on a Jane Lukas kill.
Colgate (21-7, 13-2), however, took a 9-7 advantage early in the second. Loyola rallied to go up 12-11 on a Faye Lukas kill, one of her team-high 13, but the Raiders scored five in a row to lead 16-12 on Kathleen Harris' service ace.
The lead changed hands five times, and there were 12 ties, in the early going of set three, but after Faye Lukas tied the score at 12-12 with a kill, Colgate releed off three in a row and closed the set by scoring 13 of the final 17 points.
The Raiders then never trailed in the fourth set.
Lindsay Young led all players with 16 kills, while Diane Seely posted 14 for Colgate. Caitlin Cremin had 17 digs, and Kaylee Fifer assisted on 41 points.
Loyola closes its 2013 season with a 1 o'clock match on Saturday afternoon in Reitz Arena against Bucknell University.
