Women's Volleyball Closes Out Season With a Five-Set Senior Day Win
Nov. 15, 2009
BALTIMORE, Md. - Women's volleyball sent their seniors out on a high note with a five-set (15-18, 10-8 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) win over Saint Peter's (8-22, 5-13 MAAC), Sunday on Senior Night at Reitz Arena.
Six Greyhounds had double-digit kills in the match, out-digging the Peahens 107-79. Loyola started off on top, taking the first set easily. Camaioni helped the Greyhounds jump out to a lead with six kills. Woodward began her last career match with three kills.
The Greyhounds cruised through the second match, dominating the Peahens. Loyola looked as though they would easily put Saint Peter's away in the third but ran into trouble when the Peahens took an early lead. Loyola rallied, with Camaioni leading the way, but the rally fell short and the `Hounds weren't able to hold off their opponents for long enough, and Saint Peter's snuck in a 25-20 win.
The fourth set started out similar to the third, with Saint Peter's taking a lead and the Greyhounds trying to work their way back up. This time, a key rally ended with a point for Loyola. The rally was a turning point in the set, and Loyola was able to recover the momentum they lost in the third set and take back a lead.
But Saint Peter's came back to tie the set at 20, and took a lead after coming back from a timeout. The teams played close with the Peahens having the advantage. But key blocks at the end of the set took the game for Saint Peter's.
Woodward smoked a free ball to start off the fifth set, but the Peahens came right back with a kill of their own. The two teams played each other close throughout. Saint Peter's maintained the advantage throughout the first half of the fifth.
Loyola finally broke through with a lead at 10-9 but the Peahens came right back to tie it up again.
But Loyola allowed just one point from there on out, and finished off the `Hens 15-12, and end the season with a win.
