BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team concluded its season with a hard-fought loss to Siena, 3-1 (25-16, 16-25, 21-25, 21-25), Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena on Senior Day.

Junior Faye Lukas paced the offense with a match-high 14 kills, while senior Katie Dircks landed 11 and picked up 12 digs for a double-double. Lukas also had a double-double, adding 13 digs, for Loyola (13-14, 6-10 MAAC).

Junior Nicole Sarby dished out 42 assists and had 12 digs for her first double-double of the year and senior Janet Pressler had 29 digs to lead the defensive effort. Sophomore Tina Catanach chipped in 11 digs.

For Siena (20-10, 14-4), Taylor Akana led the way with 19 kills and 21 digs, while Lesli Akeo led all players with 35 digs.

Lukas landed three kills in a four-point span early in set one to give the Greyhounds a 6-2 advantage before they extended their lead to six, 10-4, following a Catanach kill. The Saints answered, stringing together five-straight points to pull within one, 10-9, but the Greyhounds won seven points, capped off by back-to-back blocks from Maloney and Lukas, to give Loyola a 17-10 lead. The two squads traded points the remainder of the game, leading Loyola to a 25-16 victory.

The beginning of the second set was much closer, as the two teams were tied eight times, with six lead changes. The Saints broke open an even 12-12 contest though with an 8-0 run that the Greyhounds could not recover from, giving Siena the 25-16 win.

Neither team could take control of the third frame until the Saints dropped back-to-back kills to pull ahead, 23-19. Bullock and Dircks sandwiched kills around one from the Saints, but it wouldn’t be enough, as Siena went on to win, 25-21.

Loyola took an early lead in the fourth set but couldn’t hold onto it as the Saints went on a 10-3 run to pull ahead 13-10. Siena used another four-point streak to extend its lead to 17-13 and held on for the 25-21 win.

Today’s game marked the final contest for Loyola’s seniors – Katie Dircks and Janet Pressler. The duo combined for more than 850 kills, 145 aces, 1800 digs, 115 blocks and 1050 points throughout their four years.
