Bullock Records Career-High Kills And Guides Volleyball To, 3-1, Victory
Nov. 8, 2013
WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Jac Bullock landed a career-high 23 kills to lead the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team to a 3-1 (28-26, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17) road win over College of the Holy Cross Friday night. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Greyhounds and improved them to 6-19 on the season and 3-10 in Patriot League play.
For Holy Cross (7-18, 2-11 Patriot League), Katie McKernan led the way with a team-best nine kills and 24 assists, in addition to 11 digs. Emily Popp had a game-high 26 digs.
In a set that featured 13 tie scores and nine lead changes, the Greyhounds were able to string together a late rally to force extra points, before eventually winning the set, 28-26. Down 23-20, Loyola turned a Crusaders service error into four-straight points to take a 24-23 advantage. Holy Cross extended the game with a kill, and created two more set point opportunities, including one at 26-25. Junior Mindy Maloney landed a kill to knot the score for a 13th time at 26-26, before a kill from Sarby and an ace from Duzey gave the Greyhounds the two points they needed for the win.
Loyola used a 3-0 run midway through the second set to gain control of the game. The Crusaders responded with back-to-back kills to pull within one, at 18-17, but that would be as close as Holy Cross would get. Sarby and Bullock landed consecutive kills to extend Loyola's lead back to three, at 20-17, and the Greyhounds closed out the frame scoring five of the next seven points for the 25-19 victory.
Despite falling behind 10-3 at the beginning of the third game, Loyola rallied for six-straight points to pull within one, at 10-9. The Greyhounds continued to fight, eventually pulling even at 13, but they were unable to take the lead, as the Crusaders built their advantage to five, at 20-15. From there, Holy Cross held off Loyola's rally, en route to a 25-20 set win.
The Greyhounds responded in the fourth frame, jumping out to a 16-point lead, at 20-4. The Crusaders answered with two six-point runs to pull within seven, at 24-17, forcing Loyola to call a timeout. Out of the break, Maloney landed a kill to secure the match with a 25-17 win.
The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday when they head to the United States Military Academy. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
