Volleyball Culminates Rally With 5-Set Win Over Rider
Nov. 5, 2011
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland scored just 34 points in the first two sets and was in a 2-0 hole to visiting Rider University on Saturday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action, but the Greyhounds turned the tables completely on the Broncs, yielding just 38 points in the final three sets, to win in five, 13-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-13, 15-10.
After hitting just .051 in the first two sets, Loyola controlled the tempo in the third frame with good serving and defense. The Greyhounds never allowed Rider to serve more than two points in a row, siding out at a 73-percent clip.
Jac Bullock put down one of her nine kills to sideout for Loyola at 4-3 in the third set, and Katie Dircks then served three points for Loyola before Stephanie Nagy got the serve back for Rider and tying the set at 5-5.
Lauren Arnold, however, immediately logged a sideout kill for the Greyhounds, sending Bullock to the service line. She served two aces in a row, and after a Catanach kill on Bullock's third serve, Rider called a timeout.
The break in the action did not stop Bullock's serving momentum, as Mindy Maloney scored a kill on an overpass to make it 10-5 Loyola, and Rachel Jensen hit wide for Rider on the next point. Catanach logged another kill, forcing Rider's second timeout in three points. The Broncs finally came back from the timeout to sideout with a block, but Loyola led 12-6.
This time, Arnold was back for another kill to sideout, and Loyola slowly built its third-set lead to nine on an Arnold ace at 23-14. A ball-handling error by Rider's Bridget Sheerin ended the set, 25-15, in Loyola's favor.
The third set was much of the same as Loyola never trailed, and the Greyhounds went up 16-8 on a solo block by Maloney.
Rider pulled back within five, 17-12, on a Kayla Wong kill, but Lukas logged one for Loyola to sideout and give the serve to Lauren Andersen.
She served five points in a row, two on Bullock kills, another on a strike by Lukas, one on a Rider attack miscue and the final on a Arnold-Bullock block to make Loyola's lead 23-12.
In the deciding fifth set, Rider went up 1-0 after a Catanach swing went wide, but Lukas quickly recorded a kill for sideout, and Arnold had one to put Loyola in front, 2-1.
Rider tied the set at 2-2 and 3-3, but Arnold swung the serve back to Loyola with a kill to put the Greyhounds up, 4-3, and Bullock served three points to make it 7-3.
Rider pulled within two of two occasions, 7-5 and 8-6, but each time the Greyhounds had an answer with a sideout.
Arnold finished with nine kills for Loyola, and Maloney and Bullock each tallied eight. Wong was the only Broncs' hitter in double digits with 10.
Pressler also picked up the Greyhounds' offense with a career-high nine assists, most coming after Andersen, the team's setter, posted her 11 digs.
The Greyhounds are back in action with a pair of matches to close the season at home next weekend, hosting Canisius at 7 p.m. on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday at 12 noon.
