Mountain Hawks Knock Off Volleyball Friday Night
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland led 20-17 in the first set, but Lehigh University rallied to win that frame en route to a three-set victory, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, on Friday night in Reitz Arena.
Lehigh (17-10, 8-5 Patriot League) was led by Ana Spangenberg with 12 kills. Megan Polak had 12 digs and 31 kills to tie Kozer for match-high honors.
Lehigh built a 15-14 lead in the first set, but out of a media timeout Loyola tallied six of the next eight to go up, 20-17 on a Mountain Hawks attack error. Lehigh, however, answered with a four-point run to take the advantage, 21-20.
A kill by Mackenzie Fedota evened the score before two Lehigh points put the Mountain Hawks back on top, 23-21. Ernst put up a tally with a kill, 23-22, before two final Mountain Hawks scores finished the set in their favor, 25-22.
The Mountain Hawks went on a six-point run to pull into the lead to 8-3 in the second set. A kill by Stacey Kazalas broke the streak and opened up back-to-back Loyola scores to draw the Greyhounds within 8-5.
The tallies went back and forth between the teams until five of six points in the Mountain Hawks’ favor brought them toa 20-11 lead. The Greyhounds took four of the next five, capped by a Kazalas kill to make it 21-1, but. Lehigh held off the run to take the set, 25-16.
Five-straight by the Mountain Hawks in the third set helped them gain an advantage, 13-9, but Loyola kept the score close. The Greyhounds pulled within a pair, 25-22, but Lehigh scored the final point on a cross-court kill.
Loyola closes its home schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 7, with a 7 p.m. match against Lafayette.
