Rally Falls Short For Volleyball Versus Mountain Hawks
Nov. 2, 2013
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland scored four of the last six points in the third set to push the match to a fourth, but an early 9-2 Greyhounds' lead in that stanza faded, and Lehigh University defeated Loyola, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon.
Neither team led by more than three points in the third, as the Mountain Hawks (18-7 overall, 9-4 Patriot League) pulled out to a 14-11 advantage on an Amanda Clark service ace, drawing a Greyhounds' timeout.
Loyola (5-19, 2-10), however, tied the score at 15-15 behind three errors by Lehigh, and Samantha Reeves gave the Greyhounds a 16-15 advantage with an ace. Bullock then put away a kill to push the advantage to two.
The Greyhounds were up two later, 21-19, after a Mountain Hawks' hitting error, but Stephanie Slater and Courtney McCutchan had kills for Lehigh to even things at 21-21. Lehigh, however, lost a pair of points to a service and hitting error. Clark and Leah Turner had kills wrapped around another Lehigh error, making the score 24-23 in Loyola's favor. Reid then put away a kill to lock up the set for the Greyhounds.
Lehigh had four hitting errors - one due to a Mindy Maloney and Reid block - in the first 11 points of the fourth set, and Loyola looked to extend the match to a fifth set, leading 9-2.
The Mountain Hawks slowly chipped away at the led, and it was 13-8 when Jane Lukas had a kill on a tip for the Greyhounds. Lehigh then went on an 8-2 run, capped by three-straight Loyola errors to give the Mountain Hawks a 16-15 lead.
After a Reid kill made it 18-17 Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks scored three in a row, and Loyola was not closer than three the rest of the match.
Bullock had five more kills than any other player in the match, as Clark led Lehigh with 11, four in the final set.
The Greyhounds play their final two road contests of the year next weekend when they travel to College of the Holy Cross and the U.S. Military Academy.
