BALTIMORE - Tina Catanach had 15 kills in just three sets, and the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team snapped an eight-match losing streak on Wednesday night, defeating visiting Saint Peter's College, 25-12, 25-12, 26-24, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
"Tina has been a little unlucky in the past few weeks, getting balls dug when she puts really good swings on them," Head Coach Jake Lawrence said. "She has been working very hard, though, the last few weeks, and it was good to see her offensive numbers go up today."
Catanach's 15 kills were her most since posting the same number in a September 25 three-set win at Saint Peter's. Tonight's performance came on 37 swings with six errors. She also had seven digs.
Loyola's defense then played a big role in the second set, as the Greyhounds won that frame 25-12, holding Saint Peter's to a -.056 hitting percentage.
Saint Peter's jumped out to a slim 6-5 advantage in the third set before Catanach banged a kill down the line to sideout for Loyola and tie the match at 6-6.
Jac Bullock then served eight points in a row, two coming on aces. During the 9-0 run, Catanach, Mindy Maloney and Lauren Arnold each had two kills for the Greyhounds, as they extended their lead to 14-6.
After Saint Peter's scored two in a row, the Greyhounds tallied a point on a Catanach kill and two more on Maloney kills off Peahens overpasses.
The Peahens, however, pulled together runs of three and four to close within two, 20-18, before a Nicole Sarby kill made Loyola's lead three, 21-18.
Saint Peter's eventually tied the match at 24-24 on a Ashton Kuchera service ace, but Maloney and Jac Bullock tallied kills to close the match for the Greyhounds.
Loyola continues MAAC action at home on Saturday night when it hosts Rider University at 6 o'clock.
