Colgate Stages First-Set Rally To Propel Itself To Win Over Volleyball
BALTIMORE - Colgate University rallied from a late first-set deficit to get past Loyola University Maryland, 26-24, 25-20, 25-20, on Sunday in Patriot League action..
Colgate (15-9, 6-6 Patriot League) was led offensively by Alli Lowe with 18 kills. Lauren Sanderson added 31 assists for the Raiders. Bridget Kolsky had 20 digs in addition to Katie Stansbury’s 18.
After Colgate scored the first two points of the match, Loyola took eight of the next 10 to pull into an 8-4 lead, forcing a Raiders timeout. The Greyhounds later tallied three-straight, to lead 18-14 before the Raiders answered with three of their own to bring the deficit to one, 18-17. Loyola held its own with kills by Molly Jarvis, Haley Puddy, and Ernst to land at set point, 24-22, but the Raiders scored four in a row to close out the first set, 26-24.
The Raiders took the early advantage in the second set, 5-0, but a kill by Puddy put Loyola on the board. A Colgate point interrupted a four point Greyhounds run, decreasing the deficit to 10-6. The Raiders aimed to grow their advantage and tallied nine of the next 12, leaving the Greyhounds trailing by 10, 19-9.
Three-straight by Loyola got the hosts within seven, 19-12, leading to a Colgate timeout. The Raiders took the first two scores out of the break but another Puddy kill put Loyola on a run to earn six of the next eight, 24-18. The Greyhounds scored two last points, but Colgate won, 25-20.
Loyola fell behind early in the third set, when Colgate took 12 of the first 15 points to gain the advantage, 12-3. From there the play was more equal and the Greyhounds answered Colgate scores, including a three point run, 15-9. The Raiders maintained the lead and controlled play for the rest of the set, winning 25-20.
Loyola continues its stretch of home matches as they host Lehigh on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
