ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The U.S. Naval Academy did not win a set by more than three points, but the Midshipmen had enough in each stanza to defeat the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22, on Tuesday night in Patriot League play.

Navy (10-12 overall, 6-4 Patriot League) looked to quickly close out the first set, going ahead, 24-17 on one of Erin Fortner's match-high 16 kills. However, Loyola sided out with a Jac Bullock kill, kick starting a 6-0 Greyhounds run.

Mindy Maloney added a kill on the next point, and Loyola put away points on three blocks over the next four points to get within a point, 24-23. Gaby Smith, on her fourth sideout attempt, was able to record a kill for Navy to secure the first-set win.

Loyola (5-17, 2-8) built a four-point second-set lead on several occasions, and the Greyhounds once extended it to five. Simone Reid had a kill to make the lead 18-13, but Navy tallied six of the next seven points to tie the score at 19-19 on a Loyola attack error.

The teams traded sideouts and remained tied, 20-20, before a Bullock kill and Maloney solo block gave Loyola a 22-20 advantage. Navy got two back on kills by Smith and Fortner, but Maloney pulled the Greyhounds within two points of winning the set, 23-22.

The Midshipmen scored the next three only to be denied a set-point opportunity because of a serving miscue, tying the frame at 24-24. Navy, however, scored the final two points of the set to build a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Bullock led Loyola with 10 kills, hitting .389 in the process, while Maloney posted five total blocks.

The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena for a pair of Patriot League matches this weekend, hosting Lafayette College on Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking on Lehigh University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
