Army West Point Takes Down Volleyball In Three
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland volleyball team honored its seniors – Molly Cichosz, Stacey Kazalas, Elena Scarano, Corri Waters and student manager Doug Robie – prior to Saturday night’s match, but the U.S. Military Academy came away with the win, 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 in Reitz Arena.
Army West Point n(16-9, 9-3 Patriot League) had three players with 10 or more kills: Amber Clay (13), Vanessa Wesley (13), and Carolyn Bockrath (10). Haven Bethune contributed 37 assists, while Allie Strong tallied 13 digs and Ana Oglivie had 10.
The Black Knights scored five -straight to pull ahead 16-12 in the first set. Loyola broke the run, but the Black Knights answered with two more leading to a Greyhounds timeout. Loyola was first to score out of the break but trailed, 18-15, before Army increased its advantage tallying six of the next eight, 24-17.
A kill by senior Stacey Kazalas closed the gap to one in the second, and Loyola trailed Army, 12-11, before the Black Knights scored seven-straight, 19-11. The Greyhounds totaled four of the next six to pull within six, 21-15, but Army closed out the second set with four consecutive tallies to win, 25-15.
Army put up six points of eight to land at double-digits and lead, 12-8, causing a Loyola timeout. The Greyhounds were first to score after the break, but the Black Knights answered with two, 14-9. A kill by Ernst opened a Loyola run with four-consecutive tallies to make it 14-13, but Army came back with scores to increase its advantage to 16-13. The Black Knights answered and the scoring went back and forth, but a late six point run by Army closed the match, 25-16, in the visitors favor.
Loyola returns to the court tomorrow, Sunday Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. in Reitz Arena to face Colgate University.
