Niagara's Offense Pushes Purple Eagles Past Volleyball In Four

BALTIMORE - Niagara University recorded 15 more kills than Loyola University Maryland and hit .262 to defeate the Greyhounds in four, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 25-16, on Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
Kari Honomichl posted a match-high 16 kills, 12 coming in the last two matches, and Ellen Senf and Amanda Sedore each had 11 kills for the Purple Eagles (13-10 overall, 10-3 MAAC).
The Greyhounds (13-11, 6-7) fell behind 10-2 in the first set, committing six errors of different varities, but Jac Bullock scored on a sideout kill, and then Faye Lukas served four-straight points - two on aces, one on a Bullock solo block and another on a kill by the Loyola middle blocker.
Niagara sided out on a Greyhounds' ball-handling error, one of the nine called between the two teams in the match, but Loyola got the serve back when one was whistled against the Purple Eagles.
Niagara called a timeout, however, and the Purple Eagles scored five in a row out of the break to take a commanding lead in the set.
The Purple Eagles built a lead in the third set after coasting in the second, going up 22-19 on a Loyola attack error, but Loyola got a sideout point on a Lukas kill, and after a Niagara attack miscue, Nicole Sarby served an ace to tie the set at 22-22.
Loyola scored the final three points of the set, two on Lukas kills wrapped around a Sarby ace, forcing a fourth set that Niagara won.
Bullock hit .391 and led the Greyhounds with 11 kills, while Maloney and Lukas both had 10. Maloney led all players with a .500 hitting percentage in the match. Bullock had five total blocks, and Kara Schiffer posted 19 digs. Sarby set a career-high with 24 assists in three sets of action.
The Greyhounds return to the Reitz Arena court on Sunday at 2 o'clock to host Canisius College.
