Navy Tops Volleyball Saturday Afternoon
BALTIMORE - Ann Ernst posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs for Loyola University Maryland, but the U.S. Naval Academy topped the Greyhounds, 25-19, 25-13, 25-22, in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon.
Ernst's kills and digs totals led the Greyhounds in each category, while Haley Puddy contributed eight kills on just 12 swings offensively. Alaina Acchione and Erin Cunningham both had nine digs for the Greyhounds (9-14 overall, 3-7 Patriot League), Acchione's logging a career-high and Cunningham's coming in her first action of the season. Ashley Kozer contributed 25 assists.
Maddi Sgattoni led Navy (18-5, 8-2 Patriot League) with 14 kills. Patricia Mattingly had 35, while Sydney Shearn (15) and Darby Minton (11) had double-digit dig numbers.
The Greyhounds took their largest lead of the first set with three-straight to pull ahead, 9-6. After a media timeout, the Midshipmen tallied five in a row to pull ahead, 17-15, leading to a Loyola timeout. The Greyhounds were first to score out of the break, but Navy scored eight of the next 11 to close the match, 25-19.
Navy led 5-3 when it put up 11 of the next 13 points, including an eight-point run, to increase the gap to 14-7. The Mids run was interrupted by an Alisah Cash kill, but Navy scored two right after to go ahead 16-8. Loyola managed the next two scores before the Mids tallied five-consecutive to lead with 21-10.
Loyola tallied seven-straight in the third set to take the advantage, 11-6, forcing a Navy timeout. Navy slowly chipped away at its deficit, tying the score at 17-17. The totals tied four more times to bring the tally to 22-22, before Navy scored three-straight to win, 25-22.
Loyola returns to action on Saturday, October 28, when it hosts the U.S. Military Academy at 7 p.m.
