Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match To Manhattan
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Manhattan Wednesday evening at Reitz Arena by scores of 19-25, 18-25, 25-18 and 14-25.
Sophomore Faye Lukas led the Greyhounds (6-17, 3-7 MAAC) with 15 kills, while sophomore Jac Bullock notched 14. Defensively, junior Katie Dircks and freshman Tina Catanach recorded 14 digs, while freshman Lauren Andersen recorded a double-double of 35 assists and 11 digs.
For Manhattan (13-9, 6-4 MAAC), Malia McGuinness led the way with 15 kills and Mariana Furquin chipped in 12. Kelsey Huntoon earned a match-high 19 digs, while Furquin and LaKell Havens each recorded five blocks.
Manhattan used a 6-1 run midway through the first frame to take a 10-7 advantage. The Greyhounds battled to cut the Jaspers' lead to one at 17-16, forcing the visitors to call a timeout, but Manhattan earned seven of the next eight points to take a 24-17 lead, en route to a 25-19 win.
The Jaspers carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Loyola tried chipping into Manhattan's advantage, coming within three at 15-12, but the Greyhounds were unable to come any closer as the Jaspers closed out the stanza on a 5-1 run for a 25-18 victory.
The third set started with a back-and-forth battle before Loyola took control of the frame with a 7-0 run to earn a 17-10 advantage. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 10, at 22-12, and cruised to a 25-18 set win.
Manhattan won a series of long rallies at the beginning of the fourth frame to take a 7-3 advantage and extended its lead to 20-12, forcing the Greyhounds to call a timeout. The Jaspers won five of the seven points out of the break to take the match, 25-14.
Loyola will return to action this weekend as it heads to Marist and Siena for a pair of matches. The Greyhounds will face the Red Foxes on Saturday at 5 p.m., before taking on the Saints Sunday at 2 p.m.
