Volleyball Receives Balanced Attack But Canisius Outlasts Greyhounds in Four Sets

Buffalo, N.Y. - Senior Christina Greenup and junior Karlee Woodward both logged double-digit kills for Loyola on Saturday, but a hosting Canisius held Loyola to a .153 hitting percentage, and the Golden Griffins staved off a very competitive Greyhounds team, 25-15, 25-21, 20-25 and 25-23 in MAAC play.

Greenup registered a team-high 13 kills to command a Greyhounds' offensive unit that clipped the 20-point mark in three of its four sets. Woodward hit at a .269 pace with 11 kills and just four errors on 26 swings.

A very strong defensive effort by Loyola held the Griffs to only a .167 team hitting percentage. The Greyhounds had eight blocks on the day and three more digs than Canisius (62-59).

Loyola (4-19, 1-8 MAAC) received one of its most balanced offensive efforts of the season, with nearly five players reaching double-digit kills. Both sophomore Nina Camaioni and junior Stasia Collins had nine kills apiece and senior Rachel Schillinger notched eight.

Canisius (12-6, 7-2 MAAC) jumped out of the gates early in the first set, running up an early 7-0 lead. The Griffs' hit a match-high .250 in the first and held Loyola to a .029 mark to win, 25-15.

Greenup killed three early balls in the second period to give Loyola an early lead, 11-6. Canisius responded though, scoring nine consecutive points to take the lead, 15-11. A Woodward kill put Loyola up, 20-19, but the Griffs' rallied off six of the next seven points for a 25-21 win.

Loyola hit .189 in the third period and held Canisius to just .030 to take the set, 25-20. Up by one, 14-13, Loyola rallied off nine of the next 11 points to take a commanding 23-15 advantage. Two consecutive Greenup kills and three Woodward points spurred the rally that proved to be the difference in the set.

 

 

The Greyhounds hit a match-high .211 in the final set, but fell, 25-23. With the match tied 15-15, Loyola went up 18-15 on three straight points, two from sophomore Brittany Born. A Greenup kill gave her team a 23-22 advantage, but the `Griffs notched three straight points from there to put the match away.

Loyola returns to action tomorrow at noon at Niagara.
