American Downs Volleyball Tuesday Night
BALTIMORE - American University hit .329 and swept the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team, 25-13, 25-22, 25-18, in Reitz Arena on Tuesday night.
Aleksandra Kazala paced American (17-7, 8-1 Patriot League) offensively with 17 kills in the match. Assists were dominated by Olivia Wassner (18) and Kennedy Etheridge (15).
American took nine of 10 points early in the first set to quickly gain the lead, 9-4. Four-straight later in the set by American pushed the Eagles up by 10, 20-10. Loyola tallied three more in the set including kills by Zoe Pawlak and Mackenzie Fedota, but fell to American, 25-13.
The Eagles led 11-8 in the early going of the second set, but Loyola responded with four-consecutive points to take the lead, 12-11, forcing an American timeout.
The Eagles entered play after the break with three in a row to regain the advantage at 14-12. American increased the deficit and pulled ahead, 21-15, after four-straight. Loyola interrupted the run with a score, but an American kill brought the score to 22-16. There was a late effort by the Greyhounds with a four-point run to get within two, but the Eagles held on to take the second set, 25-22.
Three-straight by the Greyhounds brought Loyola to a 7-6 lead in the third set. Loyola controlled the advantage until three-in-a-row brought American into the lead by one, 11-10, before a kill by Haley Puddy tied the set for Loyola.
Five consecutive tallies by the Eagles put them ahead resulting in a Greyhounds’ timeout. American was first to score out of the break, and the team took six of the next nine, 22-14. Loyola tallied three more total with kills from Ernst and Molly Jarvis, but American finished on top, 25-16.
Loyola will host Navy at Reitz Arena, on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m.
