Maloney Sets Career Highs, But Mids Top Volleyball In Four
Oct. 16, 2013
BALTIMORE - Mindy Maloney hit .812 and had 13 kills, setting a career-best in hitting percentage and tying her high in kills, but the U.S. Naval Academy scored the last eight points of the match to beat Loyola University Maryland in four, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, on Wednesday night in Patriot League action.
Maloney's 13 kills matched her previous best, set last season at Niagara. Against Navy (8-10 overall, 4-3 Patriot League), Maloney needed just 16 swings to record her 13 kills.
Her .812 hitting percentage was just off Loyola's match record of .857 set by Kim Colavito during the 1992 season against East Carolina. It is, however, the highest by a Patriot League player in a match this season.
Maloney had five kills in the first set, but the rest of the Greyhounds managed just six as the Midshipmen too a 1-0 lead in the match.
Loyola rallied in the second set, despite Navy hitting .364 in the frame. The Greyhounds (5-15, 2-6) led throughout the match and went up by six, 17-11 on a Kara Schiffer ace, but Navy chipped away at the lead.
Jac Bullock had one of her six second-set kills to make the lead four, 18-14, after a Loyola timeout, but the teams traded sideouts until Faye Lukas had a kill to make it 20-16 in Loyoa's favor.
A service error by Loyola gave the serve back to Navy, and the Midshipmen went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-20 lead on an Alex Cassel kill.
The Greyhounds sided out on a Navy service error, and then Loyola's block propelled it to a set win. Maloney was in on three blocks, teaming twice with Lukas and once with Simone Reid to recapture the lead and go up 24-22.
Katie Sylakowski momentarily gave Navy life, holding off a Loyola set point, but Reid finished the set with a cross-court kill for the Greyhounds.
After Navy took a 2-1 lead in the match with a third-set victory, the Midshipment went up by as many as six, 12-6, early in the fourth set. Loyola scored eight of the next 10 points, however, and tied the set at 14-1 when a Mallory Shelton swing went off the tape and out for Navy.
Nicole Sarby recorded her first kill of the match a point later to give Loyola its first lead of the set, 15-14. Cassel tied it back up for Navy with a sideout kill, but Sarby responded for Loyola in kind from the left side to put the Greyhounds back in front.
From there, the Greyhounds scored twice, the first time on Navy attack error and the second on a Kelly McShea ace, forcing a Midshipmen timeout.
Navy sided out with a Cassel kill out of the break, but a service error gave the serve back to Loyola. The teams continued to trade sideouts until a Loyola attack error gave Navy the serve trailing by two, 20-18.
From there, the Midshipmen scored the next seven points on the serve of J.B. Loomis to close out the match.
Three Loyola players finished with double-digit kills, led by Maloney's 13. Bullock had 11, and Jane Lukas posted 10. Schiffer, Lauren Andersen and Micah Duzey each had 12 digs for the Greyhounds, and Maloney led the blocking effort with five.
