All-Around Effort Gives Volleyball Four-Set Win Over Holy Cross
Oct. 5, 2013
BALTIMORE - Three Loyola University Maryland players had 14 or more kills, the Greyhounds hit .272 as a team, and the team logged a season-high 90 digs in a 25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 25-12, victory over College of the Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action in Reitz Arena.
On the defensive side, Micah Duzey delivered a career-high 25 digs, while Lauren Andersen added 16 and Faye Lukas posted 13. Loyola also held Holy Cross to a .095 hitting percentage, forcing 27 hitting errors.
Loyola (5-12 overall, 2-3 Patriot League) broke a 13-13 first-set tie with three-straight points on kills by Bullock and Faye Lukas and a Bullock service ace. Holy Cross (6-10, 1-4) pulled back within two on two occasions, but Loyola pushed its lead to 20-15 on a back-row kill from Faye Lukas.
While the Greyhounds' defense was clicking in the first set, holding the Crusaders to eight kills along with eight errors, Holy Cross found its stride in the second, hitting .409 with 19 kills and only a single miscue. Loyola never led in the second set.
Loyola got out to an early lead in the third and was up 11-8 on a Mindy Maloney kill, but a Greyhounds' attack error and two Katie McKernan service aces for Holy Cross tied the set at 11-11.
Holy Cross pushed in front in the next several points and went up by four, 21-17, on a Loyola attack error from the back row.
Holy Cross came back and had set-point at 24-23 after one of Natalie Welsch's team-high 15 kills, but Simone Reid put away a kill for Loyola to tie the set at 24-24.
Welsch again gave the Crusaders an opportunity to win the set with a kill on the next point, but Jane Lukas pulled Loyola even with an equalizing kill. Holy Cross hit a ball long on the next point, and Kara Schiffer served an ace to end the set at 27-25 and give Loyola a 2-1 lead in the match. Schiffer finished with a team-high three aces.
The Greyhounds scored seven of the fourth set's first nine points, but the Crusaders went on a 5-0 run to get within a point, 7-6, on a block by Mary-Kate Short and McKernan. Loyola responded with a 4-0 run of its own, going ahead 11-6 when Maloney and Faye Lukas locked up a block.
Reid and Bullock teamed for a block to make it 17-11, and after Kamele Shizuru sided out for Holy Cross with a kill, the Greyhounds scored the last eight points of the match for the victory.
The Greyhounds' 90 digs were their most since posting 92 on October 28, 2012, against Canisius College in a five-set loss.
Kelly McShea led Loyola with 26 assists, while Andersen had 20 and Duzey added seven.
Loyola continues Patriot League play with a pair of road matches next weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday night at Bucknell University before traveling to reigning conference champion Colgate University for a 4 p.m. affair on Saturday.
