Bullock, Maloney Combine For 24 Kills, But Stags Top Volleyball

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland middle blockers Jac Bullock and Mindy Maloney and both had 12 kills and hit .500 or better, but Fairfield University hit .324 as a team and defeated the Greyhounds, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22, in Metro Atlantic Atheltic Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
Bullock posted 12 kills on 23 swings without an error, and Maloney had just a single miscue to go with 12 kills in 22 attempts. Together, they hit .511, but the rest of the Greyhounds swung at a negative percentage.
Faye Lukas continued her solid hitting from the outside - last night she set a career-high with 28 kills in a five-set win over Iona College - posting 10 kills with six errors in 30 attempts. Lukas had her second-straight double-double with 10 digs.
Fairfield (10-7 overall, 5-2 MAAC) used a five-point run to take a 9-4 lead early in the first set, and the Stags went on to hit .619 in that frame, as they finished it without an error in 21 swings.
The Greyhounds (9-7, 2-3) built a 12-10 advantage in the second off a Bullock kill and an attack error by Rachel Romansky, but the Stags rallied quickly, getting a sideout point on a Camille Coffey kill and then seven points behind the serving of Stephanie Cruz.
Katie Dircks recorded a kill for sideout at 18-13, but Fairfield went on to score four-straight after that, making its run 12-1.
Loyola again had the lead in the third set, going up 12-9 on a Lukas kill, but Fairfield tied the match at 14-14 and went up 20-16 when Lindsay Weaver put down an attempt.
The Greyhounds drew back within a pair on two occasions, 22-20 and 23-11, but the teams traded sideouts from thee, and the Stags closed out the match.
Kara Schiffer led Loyola with 13 digs, while Cruz and Kara Reis each had 14 for Fairfield. Coffey recorded 12 kills, and Marilyn Peizer hit .529 behind 10 kills without an error.
Loyola continues a four-match homestand with a pair of contests next weekend in Reitz Arena. The Greyhounds host Saint Peter's University on Saturday, October 6, and Manhattan College on Sunday, October 7. Both matches will start at 2 o'clock.
