Volleyball Beats Non-Conference Opponent Howard, 3-0
Sept. 29, 2010
Baltimore, Md. -
The Loyola University Maryland women's volleyball broke a six match losing streak with a win over Howard University, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-20), tonight at Reitz Arena.
"We prepared the same way for this match as we have for all matches," said Head Coach Scott Pennewill. "They went in with the confidence that we are going to succeed and for a young team that is an important quality to have."
The Greyhounds (6-12 overall) will be back in action for conference play Saturday and Sunday, against Siena and Marist. Both matches begin at 2 p.m.
Leading the way for the Greyhounds was senior Nina Camaioni who recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. She had a .500 hitting percentage for the match.
"Nina is going to continue day in and day out to get better then she had been," said Pennewill. "We know that seems like how can that be she is so good already. But we talk about that every day and about setting goals for ourselves. She has a list of individual goals that she wants to obtain before her career ends."
Sophomore Katie Dircks contributed 12 kills and seven digs and sophomore Aubrey Kirven had 36 assists.
The Greyhounds had seven serving aces for the night and two blocks.
Keri Partridge led the way for the Bisons with seven kills and Nicole Brown contributed 14 digs.
In the first set, Howard had an early three point lead before the Greyhounds answered back and tied up the set at six. After several more back and forth plays the score was tied at 14 before the Greyhounds took the lead and letting Bison only score two more point. Loyola finished the set 25-16 and had a .407 hitting percentage to Howards .160.
In the second set, the score was tied at four before the Greyhounds took the lead with a kill by Nina Camaioni and never looked back. Howard hung in early but they weren't able to keep up. With Loyola up by seven at 17-10 the Bison only answered with five more points before the Greyhounds finished the set 25-15. Loyola had a .368 hitting percentage to Howards .143.
In the third and final set, the score was tied early but that was it before Nina Camaioni had a kill to take the lead. The Greyhounds went on a four point run before the Bison answered back. The closest Howard came back was within one at 19-18 with a kill by Tosin Elebute. But the Greyhounds answered back with a kill by Aubrey Kirven and the Bison only answered with two more points before Loyola finished the set and the match at 25-20.
