Lehigh Runs Too Much For Volleyball In Patriot League Debut

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh Univeristy used significant runs in each of the three sets Friday night to defeat Loyola University Maryland's in its first Patriot League volleyball match, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21.
The Mountain Hawks (10-3 overall, 2-1 Patriot League) led by just a point in the first set, 10-9, after Jac Bullock logged her fourth kill of the set for the Greyhounds (3-10, 0-1). Lehigh, however, reeled off the next seven points and nine of 11. Six of the points against Loyoal were by virtue of errors by the Greyhounds.
Loyola led for much of the second set's early going, taking a 12-10 advantage on a Mindy Maloney kill, but Lehigh tallied four in a row to go up 14-10. The Mountain Hawks, however, could not build a lead of more than three, and Loyola was within a pair, 20-18, after a Lehigh service error.
Lehigh recorded kills on the next two points, and while the Mountain Hawks had two errors wrapped around a kill after that, they closed out the second set, 25-20.
The Greyhounds held the lead for most of the third set and were ahead, 17-14, after a Simone Reid kills. Lehigh got a sideout point on a Loyola service error, scoring the first of five-straight points that would include back-to-back blocks that tied the set at 17-17.
Bullock led all players with 10 kills in the match, while Maloney posted six. The two middle blockers hit .444 an .357, respectively, for Loyola. Kaylynn Genemaras had a team-best eight kills for Lehigh, while Ana Vrhel posted six with a .556 hitting percentage and four total blocks.
Loyola is back in action Saturday afternoon in the Lehigh Valley where it will face Lafayette College at 2 o'clock.
