Navy Downs Volleyball In Three
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The U.S. Naval Academy opened its Patriot League schedule with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 win Saturday over Loyola University Maryland n Annapolis, Md.
Ashley Kozer recorded a double-double for Loyola (6-9 overall, 0-2 Patriot League) with 17 assists and 10 digs, and Elena Scarano added 18 digs of her own. Ann Ernst and Haley Puddy each had eight kills for the Greyhounds.
Navy (11-3, 1-0 Patriot League) was led by Tara Dotzauer with 12 kills. Patricia Mattingly contributed 36 assists, and Sydney Shearn added 20 digs.
The Midshipmen were off to a strong start, tallying five out of the first seven points to open play, 7-2. Navy continued to pull further ahead, refusing to relinquish its lead, getting the deficit to as much as eight, 17-9, before back-to-back scores by Loyola got the Greyhounds into double digits, and put up four out of five points in the run.
Loyola landed at 18-13, but the Midshipmen answered with two of their own. The Greyhounds scored three, including kills by Ernst and Haley Puddy, which led to three Navy scores in response to make it 23-16. Loyola tallied two more points but was unable to close the gap and fell to Navy 25-18 in the first set.
Loyola went on a five-point run to pick up the pace early on in the second set, taking the Greyhounds to a lead at 7-4. Navy didn’t back down and recorded seven of the next nine to take the advantage, 11-9, before the teams exchanged points to fight for the lead, and an attack error by the Midshipmen allowed the Greyhounds to tie the score at 13-13.
Navy then ran away with a lead the team wouldn’t give up and went on an eight-point run that the Greyhounds couldn’t catch and with only two more Loyola points, Navy finished on top, 25-15.
Navy put up six-straight while Loyola struggled to get on the board in the third set. A service error by the Midshipmen gave the Greyhounds their first tally, 6-1. Back and forth points were exchanged, and four consecutively by Loyola pulled the team within two at 9-7, which would be the smallest deficit for the remainder of the set. The Greyhounds would pull from behind to be down by two, three times, but it was never enough to take the lead.
The score was 20-18 when Loyola was its closest to catching the Midshipmen, but three in a row propelled Navy to a greater advantage with 23-18. Kills by Mackenzie Fedota and Ashley Kozer aided the Greyhounds but it wasn’t enough and Navy took the set 25-21.
Loyola travels to West Point, N.Y. to face Army on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
