Volleyball Can't Sustain 1st Set Momentum In Loss To Eagles
Sept. 21, 2011
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's volleyball team hit .406 in the first set, but the Greyhounds could not sustain the outstanding play, and American University defeated the Greyhounds, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-22, in non-conference action on Wednesday night at Reitz Arena.
The Greyhounds (4-10 overall) rushed out to a 9-3 first set advantage against the Eagles (6-9), a team that reached the 2010 NCAA Tournament, their 11th all-time appearance.
American pulled to within four, 11-7, but Loyola stretched its advantage back back to six, 18-12, two points coming on Elena Frac aces and kills by Simone Reid and Tina Catanach around Eagles' errors.
The Eagles would rally from that point, however, scoring seven of the next eight points to tie the match at 19-19 on a Kelly McCaddin block. An American attack error put the Greyhounds back in front, and Faye Lukas had a kill for Loyola to give them a two-point cushion.
Lukas had another kill after one from American's Sara Rishell, but Juliana Crum had two in a row for the Eagles to knot the first-set score at 23-23.
Reid put away a kill of an American block attempt, and Reid and Bullock locked up a block of their own to end the set in Loyola's favor.
The Greyhounds continued to press forward in the second set, going up 6-2 behind strong serving by Janet Pressler. American had five attack errors in the first eight points of the second set, two caused by Loyola blocks. Reid and Mindy Maloney teamed for one, and Bullock put down a solo stuff.
American slowly chipped away at the Greyhounds' advantage, narrowing it to 11-8 on a Loyola serving error, but the Greyhounds extended it back to six, 16-10, on back-to-back kills by Bullock and Catanach.
Again, the Eagles rallied, tying the score at 19-19 when Loyola hit a ball wide. This time, however, American was able to push ahead, going up one before Reid tied it at 21-21 with a kill.
Three Loyola attack errors, however, would doom the Greyhounds, and swing the match in American's favor.
Rebecca Heath finished with a match-high 15 kills for American, while Crum and Rishell contributed 11 and 10, respectively.
Bullock led the Greyhounds for the third-straight match, putting away 12 kills to go with four blocks. Lukas chipped in with 11 kills, while Catanach had nine.
Loyola recorded nine total blocks, as Maloney and Reid each contributed five, and Andersen was in on two.
The Greyhounds resume Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action this weekend when they play at Manhattan on Saturday and at Saint Peter's Sunday. Loyola returns to Reitz Arena in one week to host George Washington at 7 o'clock on September 28.
