Volleyball Blanks Coppin State In Three
Sept. 12, 2017
BALTIMORE - Loyola volleyball earned its best start to the season since 2012, winning 3-0 versus Baltimore rival, Coppin State University. The Greyhounds downed the Eagles, and kept them scoreless in the match, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21, at Reitz Arena on Tuesday night.
Ann Ernst contributed to the Loyola (5-5) victory with 11 kills and 10 digs. Elena Scarano managed 15 digs as a match-high. Ashley Kozer tied for a match-high 18 assists to add to the Greyhounds total while Molly Werts had 12.
Coppin State (0-11) had a team-high eight kills by Asia Stennis. Angel Jamerson contributed 18 assists. The Eagles were strong defensively as Glorines Rosado had 14 digs, and Marlena Guice and Bailee Jackson each had 11.
Three-straight points by Loyola gave the Greyhounds the momentum to pull ahead, 14-11, to take the first noticeable lead of the first set. Coppin State managed a kill before three more consecutively by the Greyhounds propelled them to a 17-12 advantage. The Greyhounds got the advantage to six in their favor and wouldn't relinquish the lead and they finished with the biggest gap of the set with 25-18.
The Greyhounds went on a slow incline to subtly get the advantage in the second set. Loyola got ahead as many as five to pull away, 11-6. The Eagles took four of the next five to rally within two at 12-10, but a kill by Ernst allowed Loyola to increase the gap and score three in a row. The advantage gradually diminished with seven of the next 11 points going in favor of Coppin State to land them within two at 19-17. Ernst got a kill off a Werts assist to solidify the Greyhounds lead and the Bald Eagles were only able to get two of the next seven. Scarano concluded the set win with a service ace, 25-19.
A kill by Ernst got Loyola on the board to open the third set, but the teams traded points evening the scores to 4-4. A kill by Waters started a rally for the Greyhounds earning them the next four, forcing Coppin State to call a timeout at 8-4. The Eagles got the first score out of the break, but Loyola answered with two more to gain the greatest advantage at that point for a 10-5 lead.
Coppin State tallied five of the next seven but it wasn't enough to close the gap, and back-to-back points by the Greyhounds kept them ahead at 14-10. The Eagles called a timeout after the Loyola advantage increased to five, and a service ace by Waters after the break continued the Loyola run. Five Coppin State points got the score to 22-19, but a Greyhounds block held the four-point lead and the teams exchanged scores until a kill by Ashley Kozer earned the 25-21 match win.
Loyola travels to Fairfax, Va. for the George Mason Classic on Friday and opens play against Hampton University at 4:30 p.m.
