Sacred Heart Takes Down Volleyball In First Match Of NJIT Invitational

NEWARK, N.J. - Sacred Heart psoted 48 digs as a team and 37 total kills, defeating Loyola, 25-17, 25-16, 25-17, in the first match for both teams at the NJIT Invitational.

Rachel Schillinger had two kills, around a Greyhounds service error, early in the first set to give the Greyhounds an 9-6 lead. The Pioneers (5-3), however, scored the next three points, tying the set when Malie Herthington and Mydori Saipale teamed for a block of Loyola's Jordan Sickman.

Sacred Heart took the lead on the next point, but Loyola tied the set at 10-10 on another Schillinger kill.

The Pioneers, however, reeled off five points in a row, four coming on errors of one kind or another by Loyola, to lead, 15-10. A service error by Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek broke the Pioneers' rally, but they put together two more points for a 17-11 lead.

Loyola again stayed close early in the second set, taking an 8-6 lead on a Schillinger kill. The Greyhounds then led 12-10 on an attack error by Sacred Heart's Ashlyn Trimble, but the Pioneers scored 12 of the next 14 points, including eight in a row on the serve of Trimble, to lead 22-14.

After trailing 2-1 in the third set after a Nina Camaioni kill, Sacred Heart never trailed to close out the match.

Brittany Best led all players with 10 kills for the Pioneers, while Herthington added nine.

Schillinger paced Loyola with seven kills and had two total blocks, one solo, as well. The Greyhounds had seven total blocks as a team, led Karlee Woodward's five total.

Loyola returns to action on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with a match against UMBC. Later in the day, the Greyhounds take on host NJIT at 12 p.m.
