Volleyball Captures Inaugural Marriott Greyhound Classic Title
BALTIMORE - Faye Lukas set a career-high with 22 kills in Saturday's first match and finished with 50 in the three-match tournament, earning Marriott Greyhound Classic Most Valuable Player honors as the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team won the inaugural event in Reitz Arena.
After defeating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Rider University on Friday night, the Greyhounds beat Charleston Southern University, 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14, on Saturday morning. Loyola closed the tournament with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-22, win over Morgan State University.
Rider finished second in the tournament with wins over Charleston Southern and Morgan State. Broncs players Bridget Sheerin and Stephanie Nagy earned All-Tournament honors, while Wynter Davis garnered the same for the third-place Buccaneers.
Morgan State finished fourth and was represented by Arianna Houston on the All-Tournament Team.
In Saturday morning's match, the Greyhounds (7-4 overall) used a 13-1 run in the first set to rally from an early deficit against Charleston Southern. Loyola trailed 8-5 after a Kayla Klinger service ace, but the Greyhounds scored four in a row to lead by one before a service error game the Buccaneers a sideout point.
Katie Dircks served eight-straight points, and Loyola found itself up 18-9 in the first set.
The Greyhounds did not manage as dramatic of a rally in the second frame, but they did tally four points in a row on kills by Dircks, Andersen and Mindy Maloney and an ace by Janet Pressler to turn a 16-16 into a 20-16 lead.
Despite hitting .325 in the third set, Charleston Southern won the frame to force a fourth set. Loyola's defense was especially effective in that game, forcing six hitting errors by the Buccaneers and allowing just five kills to wrap up the match.
Loyola's .314 hitting percentage in the match was its highest of the 2012 season and best since October 30, 2010, when it posted a .390 mark in a home win over Rider.
Defensively, Schiffer recorded a career-high in digs for the second-straight match, posting 30, and Janet Pressler had 15.
Saturday's nightcap saw the Greyhounds lead throughout the first set, going ahead by as many as seven before Morgan State forced three Loyola attack errors to pull within a point, 24-23. Maloney, however, put away a kill to close the frame for the Greyhounds.
Loyola swung at a much better clip in the second set, hitting .435 with 13 kills and just three errors on 23 swings, and it walked into the third set up 2-0 after winning the second, 25-19.
The Bears pushed Loyola early in the third set, but the Greyhounds never trailed by more than two points. The game featured 12 ties and six lead changes, and Loyola used a 6-0 run to go from 15-14 down to 20-15 up behind the serve of Pressler.
She finished with a match-high 13 digs, while Lukas put away 11 kills to go with five blocks. Bullock had nine and four blocks, and Dircks put down eight kills. Andersen recorded five kills and 33 assists.
The Greyhounds continue their homestand on Wednesday night when they host Coppin State University at 7 o'clock.
