Bullock Named All-Tournament; Volleyball Falls Twice
Sept. 3, 2011
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland sophomore middle blocker Jac Bullock was named to the Battle of Baltimore All-Tournament Team on Saturday evening after the Greyhounds closed play in the third-annual event.
Loyola (2-5, overall) lost a pair of matches on Saturday, falling in three to both Coppin State and Towson.
Bullock finished the event with 21 kills and three blocks in the Greyhounds' four matches.
Loyola took an early 13-9 first-set advantage against Towson, only to see the Tigers respond with five of the next six points to tie the frame at 14-14 on a Dayane Van Ass.
Towson continued its run, scoring the next five to go up 19-14 on a Katy Buck kill. Towson would keep the five-point margain for the rest of the set, winning the opening act, 25-18.
The Tigers led nearly the entire second set, going on a 19-10 run to break a 6-6 tie and win the set, 25-16.
Two third-set Towson hitting errors wrapped around an Elena Frac service ace gave Loyola an 11-7 advantage. The Tigers, however, responded with four consecutive points to tie the deciding set at 11-11
The set featured seven ties after that point, including at 22-22 and 23-23. Towson put away kills for the final two points to win the third set, 25-23, closing out the match.
The Greyhounds never led by more than two points in the match against Coppin State. The Eagles jumped out to a sizable first-set advantage, going ahead by as many as seven, 14-7, in the early going before Loyola began to chip away at the deficit.
Down 20-14, Lukas recorded two kills, wrapped around a Coppin State attack error and kill, to make it a 21-17 Eagles' lead. Lauren Andersen then served four points in a row as Lukas and Jac Bullock combined for a block, and Bullock put away a kill, and the Greyhounds tied the set at 21-21 on a second Bullock-Lukas block.
The Eagles, however, went back up by one on Janka Schmitt's kill. Lukas, however, came back with a kill for Loyola to knot the score at 22-22. Coppin State managed to close the set with a Salena Weekly kill and two Schmitt aces, and the Eagles held a 1-0 advantage going into set two.
All momentum shifted to the Coppin State bench from that point, as it closed out the match in three, winning the final two sets, holding Loyola to a -.167 hitting percentage in the second and .059 in the third.
Lukas finished with a career-high 12 kills, and Catanach had nine. Catanach finished the tournament with 44 kills in four matches.
The Greyhounds continue action on Wednsday night in Easton, Pa., when they play Lafayette at 7 p.m.
