Women's Track and Field Opens Season Saturday

Nov. 30, 2010

The Loyola University Maryland women's track and field team will open its indoor season Saturday at the Ursinus Winter Invitational in Collegeville, Pa.

"We will be officially opening the indoor campaign this weekend," said head coach Amy Horst. "We are looking to see some solid performances from our upperclassmen as well as to have them challenged by our energetic group of sophomores and freshmen."

Last year at the meet, two records were set in the 55m and the 4x200. Whitney Gibbs broke the 55m time with a mark of 7.58, and she also was part of the 4x200 team which had a time of 1:49.89 to break the previous record of 1:55.16 set in 2008.

"We are being led in the long sprints by two freshmen, Marissa Buccellato and Jacqueline Porter, and we are eager to get them more competition experience at the collegiate level to prepare them for the championship segment of the season," said Horst. "In the short sprints, Samantha Westley is looking to hit a qualifying mark for the New Balance meet and Courtney Marro is working to have an injury free year and improve her times in the short hurdles.

"Our jumpers are all looking to gain time on the indoor surfaces and put marks in the books early to help elevate them in the conference rankings."

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Indoor Championships will be held Friday, February 18, in New York.
