Greyhounds Earn Academic Honors At University Ceremony

BALTIMORE - Three Loyola University Maryland student-athletes earned their respective academic department's top honors last week at a University-wide awards ceremony prior to 2013 commencement ceremonies.

Track and field's Noreen Petrash received the Carrell Biology Medal; women's soccer's Gigi Mangione, the Communications Medal; and, men's soccer's Hector Arellano, the Engineering Medal. The medals recognize the top all-around student in each of Loyola's majors.

Petrash was also the 2013 recipient of The Mary O'Meara Loyola Unviersity Maryland Athletic Club Scholar-Athlete Award for having attained the highest grade-point average of a graduating student-athlete who has earned at least three varsity letters.

In addition to the honors received by Petrash, Mangione and Arellano, Loyola cheerleader Brianne Wong received the Mathematics Medal, and athletics' student worker Ivana Valenzuela was the recipient of the Alfons and Christine Renk Language Medal in Spanish.
