Track And Field Set To Begin MAAC Championships Saturday
May 3, 2013
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's track and field team travels to Lawrenceville, N.J., to participate in the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Rider University on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5.
Last year the Greyhounds finished fifth, and look to add points in a number of events, with ranked athletes and strong competitors.
"We are ranked higher than we have ever been," said head coach Amy Horst. "We have made significant improvements each weekend, and I look for the team to come and do the same this weekend."
Jeanine Gill, who owns the program record in the 200m, is expected to run both the 100 and 200m races. The rookie's 25.99 record at the Loyola/Hopkins Invitational ranks 12th among the conference. Teammate Eileen Pastyrnak will join Gill in both sprints, while Brianna Nelson and Charlotte Criqui will both compete in the 200m dash.
In the 400m race, Marissa Buccellato looks to repeat her success from last year, as she added points to Loyola's effort in 2012. The sprinter finished eighth with a PR of 1:01.42. Buccellato will be joined by Nelson, CriquiLisa Potter, Rebekah Rogerson, Megan Trainer, Margaret Larkin.
Defending 800m indoor champion, Jackie D'Antonio enters the weekend ranked fifth in the event, after a time of 2:17.37 at last weekend's Lions Invitational.
"Jackie had a strong showing the past few weeks, despite the tough training she has faced off the track," Horst said. "Of all the ranked runners in the event that she has faced, she has beaten throughout the regular season."
The Greyhounds look to put up points in the distance events, as Loyola ranks within the top ten in all three races. Sophomore Anna Bosse ranks second in the 3,000m steeplechase, leading the third ranked participant by more than ten seconds.
Program record holder, Jacqueline Porter, who consistently drops time in each race she runs, leads the hurdle events for Loyola. Porter holds the school record in the 400m hurdles, ranked third among conference competitors. She and teammate Elis McGovern will represent the green and grey on Sunday's hurdle events.
At the first meet of the season, Courtney Willeford recorded a personal best distance of 37.09m in the javelin, and looks to capitalize on the success as she enters the weekend ranked first. Horst looks for a first place finish, and points from the junior multi-event participant.
Fellow field competitor, Alyssa Harrison enters the championships tied for first in the high jump. The senior jumper recorded a height of 1.61m at the Lions Invitational last weekend, and ties athletes from Rider University and Saint Peter's.
"Alyssa continues to improve as the season progresses," Horst said. "I expect the high jump to be a close event, and for her (Alyssa) to contribute points from her performance."
Championship action kicks off on Saturday with the javelin throw at 4 p.m., as events conclude with the awards banquet at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
