Track & Field Finishes Fifth At MAAC Championship; Rovegno Wins 5000
May 9, 2005
Lawrenceville, N.J. - Andrea Rovegno ran a 5,000-meter time of 16:59.40 to win the race, set a new meet record, and quailfy for the NCAA Regional meet in leading Loyola to a fifth place finish at this past weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Rider University.
Rovegno, who has now qualified for the ECAC and NCAA regional meet in the 5K event, outlasted Iona's Michelle Gallagher by 3.53 seconds to reel in the gold medal.
In addition to the 5K win, Rovegno took second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:39.95 to give her a total of 18 points on the weekend. The star sophomore fell to Iona's Salome Kosgei (4:38.77) by just 1.18 seconds.
Thrower Carolyn Kennington notched a silver medal for the Greyhounds in the javelin with her toss of 40.17 meters. The throw, which qualified Kennington for ECAC's, was an impressive six meters further than her previous career best.
Senior Jackie Truncellito fought through injuries to produce a solid weekend as she turned out fourth place finishes in the 5K (18:41.44) and the 3K. Truncellito's 3,000-meter time of 10:42.63 was a season best for her.
Sarah Spencer, who has set new personal bests in nearly every meet this season, set another one at MAAC's as she ran the 1,500 in a time of 4:55.32 to take fourth place.
Other standout performances on the weekend for the Greyhounds were Suzanne Mufareh's school record-setting shotput heave of 10.32 meters to finish seventh, Bridget Scanlan's eight place finish in the 400 to earn one point, Heather Mizzer's school record time of 17.85 in the 100 meter hurdles, and Amanda Nehring's and Erica Granera's personal bests in the 200 and 100, respectively.
"MAAC's was an incredible end to our regular season outdoor schedule. We doubled our point total from MAAC Indoors, which is proof of the hard work that these ladies have put forth over the past few months," said Loyola Head Coach Julie Culley. "Andrea qualified for NCAA Regionals, Carolyn qualified for ECAC's, five school records were broken, and many personal bests were set. It was a great team effort."
