Track & Field 5th After MAAC Champs 1st Day

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Courtney Willeford and Victoria Szczawinski both finished had third-place finishes, and the Loyola University Maryland women's track and field team stands in fifth place after the first day of the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships at Rider University.
The Greyhounds have 23 points, while Saint Peter's leads the team race with 62 points.
Willeford battled rainy and windy conditions on Saturday night in Lawrenceville, N.J., to throw 33.10 meters for a third place finish in the javelin.
Szczawinski took an early lead in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished third in 10:50.20, a time that also qualified her for the ECAC Championships. Stephanie Gibney placed sixth in the event with a time of 11:16.77.
Emily Rooney ran 39:38.03 to take sixth in the 10,000 meters, and the women's 4x800-meter relay team of Emily Doucette, Calli Pappas, Gabrielle Cocco and Jackie D'Antonio notched a fourth-place finish in 9:32.48.
The Championships wrap up on Sunday.
