Gillespie Qualifies For Junior Nationals In Racewalk At Penn Relays
May 5, 2005
Philadelphia, Pa. - Loyola freshman Shannon Gillespie finished seventh in the 5,000-meter racewalk with a time of 27:59 on Saturday at the Penn Relays to qualify for the United States Junior National Championships.
A member of the Greyhound women's cross country and track teams, Gillespie took up race-walking at her hometown track club in northern New Jersey and became one of the country's top young race-walkers. After about a year away from the event, Gillespie, 18, decided to try her hand at it once again since this is the final year she is eligible to qualify for junior nationals.
The freshman accomplished her goal and turned in Loyola's third outstanding performance of the 2005 Penn Relays. Loyola's Jackie Truncellito qualified for the ECAC's in the 10,000-meter run with her showing on Thursday night and Andrea Rovegno finished 7th of 22 in the 1,500-meter run on Thursday.
