Women's Track & Field Takes 5th At MAAC Championships
Feb. 17, 2012
NEW YORK - The Loyola University Maryland women's track & field team finished fifth at the 2012 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at The Armory New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City on Friday night.
Saint Peter's claimed the title with 233.75 points, followed by Manhattan with 126.25 points, Iona with 100 points, Rider with 87 points, Loyola with 44 points and Marist with 26 points.
"Overall I was pleased with our effort today," said head coach Amy Horst. "We went out there and just competed. We finished much higher than what our pre-meet ranking was and had some outstanding performances. We had a number of PRs and a couple school records broken. I'm just really proud of how we competed today."
Westley took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 9.09 seconds, while D'Antonio took second in the 800-meter run in 2:15.91. The second-place finish for D'Antonio was the highest individual finish for Loyola at the meet.
"To do what Sam did today is difficult," commented Horst. "She shaved a full tenth of a second off of her time from prelims to finals. And Jackie pulled out a great race. She was near the back in her heat coming into the final lap but really came through with a great finish."
Overall, the Greyhounds finished with 16 personal bests, including the two school records set by Westley and D'Antonio.
Stephanie Gibney started the meet for the Greyhounds with a PR in the 5,000, taking fifth in 17:58.72.
Gabrielle Cocco had a fifth-place finish of her own in the mile, running a personal best of 5:02.61.
All five of the athletes running the 200 notched PRs, led by Courtney Willeford who finished 11th in 27.54. Nicole Lopez (13th in 27.60), Charlotte Criqui (14th in 28.44), Lisa Potter (15th in 28.46) and Brittany Gruber (18th in 30.03) also had personal bests in the event.
Rounding out the running events, freshman Anna Bosse broke her personal record in the 3,000 by 18 seconds, taking ninth in 10:39.33
Amy Macchiaverna and Alyssa Harrison stepped-up in the high jump, combining to score nine points by tying for fourth with a height of 1.55 meters. It was a season-high for both and a PR for Macchiaverna.
In one of the more impressive feats of the day, freshman Maria Hacker placed seventh in the pole vault after competing in the event for the first time in her career. Hacker cleared a height of 2.30 meters.
"Maria was impressive," said Horst. "After not ever practicing the event, what she did today showed what kind of athlete she is. She just went out and had fun with it."
The Greyhounds also placed 14 members on the 2012 MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible, a student athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. Among the 14 student athletes were: Marci Baileys, Marissa Buccellato, Gabrielle Cocco, Jackie D'Antonio, Stephanie Gibney, Brittany Gruber, Alyssa Harrison, Kristina Krupa, Margaret Larkin, Noreen Petrash, Jackie Porter, Megan Trainer and Courtney Willeford
