Gill Paces Track and Field To A Top-10 Finish
Jan. 18, 2014
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Jeanine Gill won the 200m race at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational on Saturday afternoon to lead Loyola University Maryland track and field to a ninth-place team finish.
The hosting Maryland Terrapins finished first with 170 points, as fellow Patriot League member, the United States Naval Academy, came in second (111). Following Navy, local non-conference rival UMBC (86) and Morgan State (64) followed in third and fourth, respectively. Howard University grabbed the fifth place spot with 62 points, while Johns Hopkins (57) and Coppin State (41) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Richmond was selected eighth, totaling 30 votes, followed by Loyola (23) and Delaware State (18) to round out the top-10.
Gill won the 200m with a time of 26.17, only .15 seconds shy of her earlier program record set in her rookie season at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. She contributed the most points to the team effort, tallying 10 with her first place finish.
Also topping the day’s events, freshman Jessa Laspesa broke the program record in the 300m with a time of 43.94.
“There are not many opportunities to run the 300m,” said Head Coach Amy Horst. “It was great for Jessa to be able to run the event and find success at her third collegiate meet.”
Laspessa topped the previous record of 44.79, held by Kristina Krupa from 2011. The rookie sprinter’s record breaking performance finished 18th ahead of fellow Patriot League competitors.
In the distance events, senior Kiera Harrison set the pace finishing third and adding six points to the team total. The veteran runner finished the mile in 5:10.10.
Off the track, junior Maria Hacker was the final Greyhound to contribute to the point total. Hacker took sixth place with a final mark of 2.55m in the pole vault.
The Greyhounds return back to action on Friday, Jan. 31, traveling to both the Patriot Games and Penn State National.
