Jan. 10, 2014
NEW YORK CITY - In the first meet of the indoor season, Uchechukwu Emili broke her own school record in the weight throw as the Loyola University Maryland women's track and field team finished fifth (61 points) out of 13 teams at the New York City Gotham Cup.
The Greyhounds finished ahead of all other Patriot League competitors, beginning the season ahead of the United States Military Academy and the College of the Holy Cross. Fordham University finished first with 97 points, followed by Villanova (83), LIU Brooklyn (68), and local Baltimore rival, Coppin State (62).
Emili had a mark of 12.95m to break her own school record of 12.41m set last season at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Emili was also 10th in the shot put with a distance of 10.52m.
Senior Courtney Willeford also competed in the shot put, finishing 20th with a mark of 9.68m.
While setting a PR in the triple jump, junior Jenna Smith added to the team total, finishing 20th with a final mark of 10.13m.
The mid-distance runners had a strong showing at the season opener, as five Greyhounds contributed to the point total from the Armory. Freshman Sarah Askine ran a time of 2:29.33 in her collegiate debut in the 800m. She finished 13th overall and contributed six points to the team total. In the same event, Elizabeth Sypek added an additional point, finishing 26th in 2:40.83.
The trio of Kiera Harrison, Sara Gilson and Mary DeGregorio combined for 11 points in the mile. Harrison finished among the top-10, crossing the finish in 5:16.33. Moments later Gilson took 14th in 5:36.47 and DeGregorio finished 18th in 5:42.06.
Junior Anna Bosse was Loyola's top track scorer, taking 10th in the 3000m with a time of 10:39.01. Bosse added eight points to the Greyhounds' scoring effort, while teammates Jessica Peters and Erica Canas also added points in the same event.
