Women In Sports Day Slated for Feb. 21
Feb. 3, 2010
BALTIMORE, Md. - One of the year's most popular events returns to Loyola University February 21, 2010. Loyola athletics will celebrate women and their contributions to, and ongoing participation in, athletics on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
The day will feature several activities designed to educate girls on the positive impact of sports and physical activity. The event is open to girls from Kindergarten through eighth grade and will be centered around the Greyhounds' women's basketball game against Niagara at 12 noon.
"This is a great opportunity for girls in our community to come out and see a basketball game while they participate in a day that is geared to celebrating women of all ages," Loyola Head Women's Basketball Coach Joe Logan said. "We hope that parents will encourage their daughters to attend and that our event will serve as a lasting reminder of the importance of continued advancement of women in sports."
Check-in starts at 10 a.m. in McGuire Hall in Loyola's Andrew White Student Center. From there, participants will be able to tour Loyola athletics facilities with student-athletes from Loyola's nine women's varsity athletics teams. Activities will include face-painting, tattoos and poster-making. Participants will enjoy free pizza, as they get ready to cheer on the Greyhounds.
Loyola athletes will be on hand for a post-game autograph session and an ice cream social.
All activities are free of charge, and participants will receive a commemorative "White Out" t-shirt and more. Admission to the Loyola-Niagara women's basketball game is also free.
National Girl and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition, which combines the experience and resources of the seven premiere female-serving organizations in the United States: American Association of University Women, Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, the Women's Sports Foundation and the YWCA USA.
NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and work to ensure equality for women's sports. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing goal of equality and access for women in sports.
